ALLIES

ALLIES is the official Gay+Straight Student Alliance of Birmingham-Southern College.  Meeting times and places are posted around campus, or you can find them here. All meetings--including the identities of those present--are strictly confidential.  This represents a commitment on the part of the Alliance to the privacy of those whom, for whatever reason, would not feel comfortable letting their participation be known.

Allies exists to fulfill the following objectives:

  • To create an environment in which people of all genders and all sexual orientations feel safe and free to express themselves.

  • To heighten the awareness of issues facing gay students, educators, and administrators.

  • To express a sense of solidarity among Birmingham-Southern's gay and straight students.

  • To provide opportunities for social interaction among gay and accepting students.

  • To allow for appropriate political activism.

The gay rights movement is important to the world; to every man, woman, and child; to every homosexual, bisexual, and heterosexual; to every family, every community, and every nation.  The gay rights movement is important because it is about human rights for all people, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.  Therefore, all people who love freedom and justice have a vested interest in the success of our movement.
